Chapter 1 ⇨
Adam and Eve are placed in the Garden of Eden—They are forbidden to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil—The serpent (Lucifer) deceives Eve—She and then Adam partake of the forbidden fruit— Eve bears Cain and Abel—They offer sacrifices—Cain slays Abel and is cursed by the Lord—The children of men multiply.
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. So God created man in his own image.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul, endowed with speech.
And the Lord said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and from the rib which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam awoke from his sleep, and behold, a woman stood before him.
And he said, This is now bone of my bones; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. And Adam called her name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
And God blessed them, and called their names Adam and Eve in the day that he created them. And the Lord God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
And the Lord God took the man and his wife, and put them into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And he commanded them, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die.
And when the Lord God had blessed them and given them commandment, he departed from them; and Adam and his wife dwelt in the garden according to the word which the Lord had spoken.
Now the serpent, which the Lord God had made upon the earth, came unto them to entice them, that they might transgress the commandment of the Lord.
And the serpent beguiled the woman, and persuaded her to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And the woman hearkened unto the voice of the serpent, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.
Thus did Adam and his wife transgress the commandment of the Lord; and the Lord knew it, and his wrath was kindled against them, and he cursed them.
And the Lord God drove them forth that day from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence they were taken; and they dwelt at the east of the garden. And Adam knew his wife Eve, and she bare two sons and three daughters.
And she called the name of her firstborn Cain, saying, I have gotten a man from the Lord. And she called the name of the other Abel, for she said, In vanity came we into the earth, and in vanity shall we depart.
And the children grew; and their father gave them a portion in the land. And Cain was a tiller of the ground, and Abel a keeper of sheep.
And it came to pass, after some years, that they brought an offering unto the Lord. Cain brought of the fruit of the ground, and Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering; and fire came down from heaven and consumed it.
But unto Cain and to his offering the Lord had not respect, for he had brought of the lesser fruit of the ground before the Lord. And Cain was wroth, and his countenance fell; and he was jealous of his brother Abel, and sought occasion against him to slay him.
And it came to pass, that Cain and Abel went out into the field to do their work. Cain was plowing his ground, and Abel fed his flock. And the flock passed over the furrows which Cain had made, and this thing displeased Cain greatly.
And Cain said unto Abel in anger, What is this betwixt me and thee, that thou comest to dwell upon my land, and bringest thy flock to feed therein?
And Abel answered and said unto him, What is this betwixt me and thee, that thou eatest the flesh of my flock, and art clothed with their wool?
Now therefore put off the wool of my sheep wherewith thou art clothed, and render unto me the fruit and flesh thereof which thou hast eaten. Then will I go forth from thy land, as thou hast spoken.
And Cain said unto him, Surely if I slay thee this day, who will require thy blood at my hand?
And Abel answered, saying, Surely the Lord who made us upon the earth shall avenge me; he shall require my blood of thee, shouldst thou slay me. For the Lord is judge and avenger, and he shall render unto every man according to his works, and unto the wicked according to his wickedness.
And now, if thou slay me here, verily God knoweth the thoughts of thy heart, and will judge thee for the evil which thou purposest against me this day.
And when Cain heard the words of Abel his brother, his wrath was kindled yet more against him, for that he had spoken these things.
And Cain rose up in haste, and took the iron part of his ploughshare, and smote his brother therewith suddenly, and slew him. And Cain shed the blood of his brother Abel upon the earth, and it flowed before the flock.
And afterward Cain repented that he had slain his brother, and he was sorely grieved, and wept over him, and his soul was vexed within him.
And Cain arose and digged a hole in the field, and laid his brother’s body therein, and covered it with dust.
And the Lord knew what Cain had done unto his brother; and the Lord appeared unto Cain and said, Where is Abel thy brother?
And Cain dissembled, and said, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper?
And the Lord said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
For thou hast slain thy brother, and hast lied before me, and didst think in thine heart that I beheld thee not, nor knew thy deeds.
But thou hast done this thing, and slain thy brother without cause, for that he rebuked thee righteously. Now therefore, cursed art thou from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand.
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth unto thee. And thou shalt be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth, until the day of thy death.
And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, from the place where he had dwelt, and became a wanderer upon the face of the earth, eastward of Eden, he and all that pertained unto him.
And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bare a son; and he called his name Enoch, saying, In that day did the Lord begin to give him rest upon the earth.
And Cain began to build a city, and he called the name thereof Enoch, after the name of his son; for in those days the Lord gave him peace, and he wandered no more as before.
And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael, and Mehujael begat Methusael.
