Chapter 6 ****

Noah and his sons complete the ark—The Lord tells Noah to gather the beasts, fowls, and creeping things, each male and female—The sons of men mock Noah and refuse to repent—The Lord causes the earth to shake and the heavens to darken—The animals come of their own accord, and Noah secures them in the ark—The Lord shuts the ark, and the floodgates of heaven are opened—The waters prevail upon the earth, and all flesh that is upon the ground perishes.

And it came to pass after the death of Methuselah, that the Lord spake unto Noah, saying,

Go thou and thy household into the ark; behold, I will gather unto thee all the beasts of the earth, the cattle of the field, and the fowls of the air; and they shall all come and stand about the ark.

And thou shalt sit by the door of the ark, and all beasts, cattle, and fowls that come and bow themselves before thee, thou shalt take, and deliver into the hands of thy sons that they may bring them into the ark; but all that standeth afar off thou shalt leave.

And the Lord brought it to pass on the morrow, that beasts, cattle, and fowls came in great multitudes and surrounded the ark.

And Noah went and sat by the door of the ark; and of all flesh that bowed before him he brought into the ark, and all that remained stood upon the earth.

And there came a lioness with her two whelps, one male and one female, and they bowed before Noah; but the two whelps rose against the lioness and smote her, and made her flee away from her place; and they returned to their places and bowed themselves upon the earth before Noah.

Then the lioness fled and stood in the place of the lions.

And Noah beheld this, and marvelled greatly; and he arose and took the two whelps, and brought them into the ark.

Thus did Noah bring into the ark of all living creatures that were upon the earth, so that none was left but those which Noah brought into the ark.

Two and two came unto Noah into the ark of all beasts, yet of clean beasts and clean fowls he brought seven pairs, as God had commanded him.

And all the beasts, cattle, and fowls remained there, surrounding the ark on every side, and the rain had not yet descended until seven days were fulfilled.

Then on that day the Lord caused the whole earth to quake, and the sun was darkened, and the foundations of the world were moved; the whole earth rocked violently, and lightning flashed, and thunder roared; and all the fountains of the deep were broken up, such as had not been known unto the inhabitants before: and God did this mighty work to terrify the sons of men, that they might do no more evil upon the earth.

Yet still the sons of men hearkened not, but increased the anger of the Lord, and inclined not their hearts unto these things.

And it came to pass at the end of seven days, in the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

And the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened; and rain descended upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

And Noah and his household, and all the living creatures that were with him, entered into the ark because of the waters of the flood, and the Lord shut him in.

And all the sons of men that remained upon the earth were consumed by the rain, for the waters prevailed mightily upon the earth, while the beasts and cattle still encircled the ark.

Then the sons of men gathered themselves together, about seven hundred thousand men and women, and they came unto Noah at the ark,

crying, Open unto us, that we may enter unto thee into the ark—wherefore shall we perish?

But Noah, with a loud voice, answered them from the ark, saying, Have ye not all rebelled against the Lord, and said He is not? Therefore hath the Lord brought upon you this judgment, to destroy you from the face of the earth.

Is not this the same thing that I proclaimed unto you one hundred and twenty years ago? Yet ye hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord; and now ye seek to live upon the earth?

And they answered Noah, saying, We have repented and will return unto the Lord; open to us, that we may live, and not die.

Then Noah answered them, saying, Behold, now that ye see the anguish of your souls, ye desire to return unto the Lord; why would ye not return in the hundred and twenty years which the Lord gave you?

Behold, ye come now and speak thus because of the fear of death, yet the Lord will not hearken unto you, neither will He give ear on this day, and ye shall not prosper in your request.

Then the sons of men drew near to break into the ark, to escape the rain; for they could not endure the fury of the waters.

But the Lord sent out the beasts and cattle that stood round about the ark; and the beasts drove them from the place, and every man returned to his own way, and they were scattered upon the face of all the earth.

Yet the rain still descended upon the earth, and it rained forty days and forty nights; and the waters prevailed mightily upon the earth, and all flesh that moved upon the earth, both man and cattle, and creeping things, and fowls of the air, died; only Noah and those that were with him in the ark remained alive.

And the waters prevailed, and they increased greatly upon the earth, and lifted up the ark, and it was raised above the earth.

And the ark floated upon the face of the waters, and was driven upon the waves, so that all the living creatures within were tossed as pottage in a pot.

And great fear seized all the living creatures that were in the ark; and the ark was nigh to being broken.

And all the creatures were sore afraid, and the lions roared, and the oxen lowed, and the wolves howled; and every creature in the ark cried and lamented in its own voice, so that their voices went forth afar; and Noah and his sons wept in their anguish, for they feared lest they should perish.

Then Noah prayed unto the Lord, crying, O Lord, help us; for we have no strength to bear this tempest that hath encompassed us, for the waves of the waters have compassed us about, and deadly floods trouble us; save us, O Lord, save us; turn Thy face unto us and have mercy upon us; redeem us and deliver us.

And the Lord heard the voice of Noah, and remembered him.

And a wind passed over the earth, and the waters abated; and the ark rested.

And the fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained.

And the waters decreased continually, and the ark came to rest upon the mountains of Ararat.

Then Noah opened the windows of the ark, and Noah cried unto the Lord, saying, O Lord, Thou who hast formed the earth and the heavens, and all that is therein, bring forth our souls from this prison, for we are wearied with sighing.

And the Lord hearkened unto Noah, and said unto him, When thou hast fulfilled the full year, then shalt thou go forth.

And at the end of the year, the waters were abated from off the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark.

And it came to pass on the twenty and seventh day of the second month, that the earth was dry; yet Noah and his sons, and those with him, went not forth from the ark until the Lord commanded them.

And the day came that the Lord spake unto them, saying, Go forth from the ark; and they went forth, every one to his own way, and to his own place.

And Noah and his sons dwelt in the land which God had spoken unto them; and they served the Lord all the days of their lives, and the Lord blessed Noah and his sons as they went out from the ark.

And the Lord said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth; be strong, and increase abundantly in the land, and multiply therein.
