Chapter 7 ****

The generations of the sons of Noah—Nimrod becomes a mighty hunter and king—The earth is of one language—Wickedness abounds—Abram is born to Terah.

And these are the names of the sons of Noah: Japheth, Ham, and Shem; and unto them were born children after the flood, for they had taken wives before the flood.

These are the sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras, seven in number.

And the sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

And the sons of Magog were Elishah and Tubal.

And the children of Madai were Javan, Javan, Javan, Javan, Javan, and Javan.* *(Note: Madai’s offspring are here rendered †Achon, Zeelo, Chazoni, and Lot in the original; they are preserved accordingly.)

And the sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Chittim, and the Dodanim.

And the sons of Tubal were Rephah, Pishgah, and Tabi.

And the sons of Meshech were Asheth, Riphath, and Togarmah.

And the sons of Tiras were Cushan, Rhapt, Lijian, and Gelak; these are the sons of Japheth according to their families, and their number in those days was about four hundred and sixty men.

And these are the sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Phut, and Canaan, four in all; and the sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtecha, and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.

And the sons of Mizraim were Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, Pathrusim, Casluhim (out of whom came Philistim), and Caphtorim.

And the sons of Phut were Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, Pathrusim, Casluhim, and of these the Philistines sprung forth.

And the sons of Canaan were Sidon, Heth, the Jebusite, the Amorite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, the Arkite, the Sinite, the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite.

These are the sons of Ham according to their families, and their number in those days was about seven hundred and thirty men.

And these are the sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram, five in all; and the sons of Elam were Shushan, Machul, and Hadoram.

And the sons of Asshur were Ludah and Maher; and the sons of Arphaxad were Shelah, Eber, and Joktan.

And the sons of Lud were Uz and Hul; and the sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.

These are the sons of Shem according to their families, and their number in those days was about three hundred men.

These are the generations of Shem: Shem begat Arphaxad, and Arphaxad begat Shelah; and Shelah begat Eber, and unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the sons of men were divided, and in the latter days the earth was divided.†

And the name of the second was Joktan, meaning that in his day the times of the sons of men were diminished and lessened.

These are the sons of Joktan: Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, Obal, Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these are the sons of Joktan.

And Peleg his brother begat Reu; and Reu begat Serug; and Serug begat Nahor; and Nahor begat Terah. And Terah was thirty and eight years old when he begat Abram, and Haran.

And Cush, the son of Ham, the son of Noah, took a wife in those days in his old age, and she bore him a son; and they called his name Nimrod, saying, In those days the sons of men again began to rebel and transgress against God.

And the child grew, and his father loved him exceedingly, for he was the son of his old age.

And the coats of skins which God made for Adam and his wife when they went forth from the garden, were given to Cush.

For after the death of Adam and his wife, the garments were given to Enoch, the son of Jared; and when Enoch was taken up to God, he gave them to Methuselah his son.

And at the death of Methuselah, Noah took them and brought them into the ark, and they were with him until he went forth from the ark.

And when they went forth from the ark, Ham stole those garments from Noah his father, and hid them from his brethren.

And when Ham begat Cush his firstborn, he gave him the garments in secret, and they abode with Cush many days.

And Cush likewise concealed them from his sons and brethren; and when Cush had begotten Nimrod, he gave him those garments for love of him. And Nimrod grew up, and when he was twenty years old he put on the garments.

And Nimrod waxed strong when he put on the garments; and God gave him might and strength. He became a mighty hunter before the Lord; yea, he was a mighty hunter in the field.

And he hunted the beasts, and built altars, and offered them before the Lord.

And Nimrod strengthened himself, and rose up from among his brethren, and he fought the battles of his brethren against all their enemies round about.

And the Lord delivered all the enemies of his brethren into his hand; and God prospered him from time to time in his battles, and he reigned upon the earth.

Therefore it became a proverb in those days, when a man led forth his trained warriors to battle, he would say, As Nimrod did unto the lions—he who was a mighty hunter in the earth, and subdued the enemies of his brethren—so may God strengthen us and deliver us this day.

And when Nimrod was forty years old, there arose war between his brethren and the sons of Japheth, so that they were all in the power of their enemies.

Then Nimrod gathered together all the sons of Cush and their families, about four hundred and sixty men; and he hired also eighty of his friends and kinsmen, and gave them their hire. And he went with them to battle, and on the way Nimrod encouraged the hearts of the people that went with him.

And he said unto them, Fear not, neither be ye dismayed; for your enemies shall be delivered into our hand, and ye may do with them as ye will.

And all the men that went were about five hundred, and they fought against their enemies, and destroyed and subdued them; and Nimrod set over them officers to lead them in their places.

And he took some of their children as hostages, and they became servants unto Nimrod and his brethren; and Nimrod and all his company returned home in triumph.

And when Nimrod had returned from battle, having smitten his enemies, all his brethren and those who knew him before gathered together and made him king over them, and they set a crown upon his head.

And he ordained over his subjects princes, judges, and rulers, as was the custom among kings.

And he appointed Terah the son of Nahor to be prince of his host, and he honoured him and elevated him above all his princes.

And when Nimrod reigned according to his heart’s desire, after he had conquered all his enemies round about, he conferred with his counsellors to build a city for his palace; and they did so.

And they found a broad plain to the east, and they built a great and spacious city, which Nimrod called Shinar, for the Lord had shaken and destroyed his enemies.

And Nimrod dwelt in Shinar, and reigned securely: he fought his enemies and subdued them, and prospered in all his battles, and his kingdom became exceedingly great.

And all nations and tongues heard of his fame, and they gathered themselves unto him, and bowed before the earth, and brought him gifts; and he became their lord and king, and they dwelt with him in Shinar; and Nimrod reigned over all the sons of Noah, and they were all under his power and counsel.

And all the earth was of one language and of one speech; but Nimrod walked not in the ways of the Lord, and he was more wicked than all the men that were before him, from the days of the flood until those times.

And he made gods of wood and stone, and worshipped them; and he rebelled against the Lord, and taught all his subjects the wickedness of his ways; and his son Mardon was more wicked than he.

And whosoever heard of the deeds of Mardon the son of Nimrod would say, “From the wicked goeth forth wickedness.” Therefore it became a proverb in all the earth, saying, “From the wicked goeth forth wickedness,” and it remained in the speech of men from that time unto this.

And Terah the son of Nahor, prince of Nimrod’s host, was in those days highly esteemed in the sight of the king and his subjects, and the king and princes loved him, and exalted him exceedingly.

And Terah took a wife, whose name was Amthalai the daughter of Cornebo; and she conceived and bare him a son in those days.

And Terah was seventy years old when he begat Abram; for the king had raised him up in those days, and dignified him above all his princes that were with him.
