Chapter 5 ⇦****⇨
Noah grows into a just man, perfect in his generation—The Lord commands Noah and Methuselah to proclaim repentance to the sons of men—They are given 120 years to repent—Noah and Methuselah speak all the words of the Lord—The sons of men heed them not and are stiffnecked—Noah refrains from taking a wife—The Lord commands Noah to take a wife and raise up seed—The Lord will bring the flood of waters upon the earth—All flesh will be destroyed—Noah finds grace in the sight of the Lord—The Lord commands Noah to build an ark—He is to bring two couple of all living things, male and female, to the ark, and all food that is eaten by them—He makes the ark in five years, as the Lord had commanded—Noah takes the three daughters of Eliakim, son of Methuselah, for wives for his sons—Methuselah the son of Enoch dies at 960 years of age.
And it came to pass in the eighty and fourth year of the life of Noah, that Enoch the son of Seth died; nine hundred and five years old was he at his death.
And in the hundred and seventieth and ninth year of the life of Noah, Cainan the son of Enosh died; and all the days of Cainan were nine hundred ten years.
And in the two hundred thirtieth and fourth year of the life of Noah, Mahalalel the son of Cainan died; and the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred ninety and five years.
And Jared the son of Mahalalel died in those days, in the three hundred sixty and sixth year of the life of Noah; and all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years.
And all who followed the Lord died in those days, before they saw the evil which God had declared to bring upon the earth.
And after the lapse of many years, in the four hundred eightieth year of the life of Noah, when all those men who followed the Lord had died from among the sons of men, and only Methuselah remained, God spake unto Noah and Methuselah, saying,
Speak ye, and proclaim unto the sons of men, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Return ye from your evil ways, and forsake your works; and the Lord will repent of the evil which he hath declared to do unto you, so that it shall not come to pass.
For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I give you a space of one hundred and twenty years; if ye will turn unto me and forsake your evil ways, then will I also turn away the evil which I have spoken of you, and it shall not come to pass, saith the Lord.
And Noah and Methuselah spake all the words which the Lord commanded them unto the sons of men, day after day, ceasing not to speak unto them.
But the sons of men would not hearken unto them, neither did they incline their ears to their words; for they were a stiffnecked people.
And the Lord granted them the space of one hundred and twenty years, saying, If they will return, then will I repent of the evil, that I should not destroy the earth.
Now Noah the son of Lamech refrained from taking a wife in those days, saying, Surely now God will destroy the earth; wherefore then shall I beget children?
Yet Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations: and the Lord chose him to raise up seed from his loins upon the face of all the earth.
And the Lord said unto Noah, Take thou unto thee a wife, and be thou fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth; for I have seen thee righteous before me in this generation.
And thou shalt raise up seed, and thy children shall dwell with thee in the midst of the earth. So Noah went and took a wife, and he chose Naamah the daughter of Enoch; and she was five hundred eighty years old.
And Noah was four hundred ninety and eight years old when he took Naamah to be his wife.
And Naamah conceived and bare a son, and he called his name Japheth, saying, God hath enlarged me in the earth. And she conceived again and bare a son, and called his name Shem, saying, God hath appointed me a remnant to raise up seed in the midst of the earth.
And Noah was five hundred two years old when Naamah bore Shem. And the boys grew and walked in the ways of the Lord, in all that Methuselah and Noah their father taught them.
And Lamech the father of Noah died in those days; yet truly he walked not wholly in the ways of his father. And he died in the hundred ninety and fifth year of the life of Noah.
And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy years; and he died.
And all the sons of men who knew the Lord died in that year before the Lord brought the evil upon them; for the Lord would have them die, that they might not see the destruction which he would bring upon their brethren and kinsmen, as he had spoken.
And in those days the Lord said unto Noah and Methuselah, Stand forth and proclaim unto the sons of men all the words which I spake unto you in those days, peradventure they may turn from their evil ways, and I will repent of the evil and not bring it.
So Noah and Methuselah stood forth, and said in the ears of the sons of men all that God had spoken concerning them.
But the sons of men would not hearken, neither would they incline their ears unto their words.
And it came to pass after this, that the Lord said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me, for the earth is filled with violence by reason of their evil deeds; and behold, I will destroy the earth.
Make thee an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it within and without with pitch.
And this is how thou shalt make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth fifty cubits, and the height thirty cubits.
Thou shalt make a window to the ark, and finish it to a cubit above: and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
And behold, I, even I, will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every living thing that is upon the earth shall die.
But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou and thy sons, and thy wife, and the wives of thy sons with thee.
And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.
Moreover thou shalt take to thee three maidens from the daughters of men for thy sons to be their wives.
Then Noah rose up and did according unto all that the Lord commanded him. And in the five hundredth and ninety and fifth year of Noah’s life, he began to build the ark.
And Noah made the ark; he made it of gopher wood; and he finished it in five years, as the Lord had commanded him.
And he took unto his sons three wives, even the three daughters of Eliakim the son of Methuselah, as the Lord had commanded him.
And in those same days Methuselah the son of Enoch died: nine hundred sixty years old was he at his death.
