Chapter 4 ⇦****⇨
Methuselah is anointed as a king of kings and reigns in righteousness—The sons of men turn from the Lord and provoke him—The hybridizing of animals begins—Lamech is born in the days of Enoch—The wife of Lamech bears Noah—Lamech dies—Those who walk in the ways of the Lord pass away—Corruption grows in the Earth—Noah finds grace in the sight of the Lord.
And all the days of Enoch upon the earth were three hundred threescore and five years.
And it came to pass, when Enoch was taken up into heaven, that all the kings of the earth arose, and took Methuselah his son, and anointed him, and made him to reign in the stead of his father.
And Methuselah walked uprightly before God, according to all that his father Enoch had taught him; and he instructed the sons of men in wisdom and knowledge, and in the fear of the Lord all the days of his life, and he turned not aside to the right hand nor to the left.
But in the latter days of Methuselah, the sons of men turned aside from the Lord, and corrupted the earth, and dealt unjustly one with another; yea, they robbed and spoiled, and rebelled against the Most High, and would not hearken unto the voice of Methuselah, but hardened their hearts against him.
Wherefore the wrath of the Lord was kindled against them, and He destroyed the seed of the earth in those days, and the land yielded not her increase.
For when they tilled the ground to provide bread for their sustenance, behold, it brought forth thorns and thistles, even that which they had not sown.
Yet did the sons of men not turn from their wickedness, but their hands were stretched out yet more to do evil in the sight of the Lord; and they provoked the Lord to anger with their evil ways, so that He repented that He had made man upon the earth.
And the Lord purposed in His heart to destroy and to make an end of them, and He did according to His word.
Now it came to pass, when Lamech the son of Methuselah was an hundred and threescore years old, that Seth, the son of Adam, died.
And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.
And Lamech was an hundred fourscore years old when he took to wife Ashmua, the daughter of Elishaa, the son of Enoch his uncle; and she conceived and bare him a son.
And in those days the sons of men sowed the ground, and the earth yielded but little increase; yet they repented not of their evil doings, but continued to transgress and rebel against the Lord.
And the wife of Lamech conceived and bare him a son, at the return of the year.
And Methuselah called his name Noah, saying, In his days shall the earth have rest and be freed from corruption. And Lamech called his name Menachem, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed.
And the child grew, and was weaned, and walked in the ways of his father Methuselah, and was perfect and upright before the Lord.
But the sons of men departed from the ways of the Lord in those days, for they multiplied exceedingly upon the face of the earth, with sons and daughters, and they taught one another wickedness, and continued to sin against the Lord.
And every man made unto himself a god, and they spoiled and robbed one another, neighbor against neighbor, and even against kindred; and the earth was defiled and filled with violence.
And their judges and rulers took unto themselves the daughters of men by force, every man according to his desire, and they dealt treacherously. Yea, the sons of men took from among the cattle of the field, and from the beasts of the earth, and from the fowls of the air, and they mingled one kind with another to provoke the Lord; and the Lord beheld the earth, and, lo, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth, both man and beast.
And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowl of the air; for I repent that I have made them.
And all those who walked in the ways of the Lord perished in those days, ere the Lord brought the evil upon man, which He had spoken; for thus it was ordained of the Lord, that they should not behold the judgment which was to come upon the sons of men.
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, and the Lord chose him and his sons, that a seed might be raised up upon the face of all the earth.
