Chapter 2 ****

Adam begets Seth, and Seth begets Enos—Men multiply and rebel against God by worshiping idols—The Lord sends a famine and floods the river Gihon—A third of all men are destroyed—Men continue to rebel—Cainan foresees the Great Flood—Men cause their wives to become barren—Lamech slays Cain and then his son.

And it came to pass in the hundred and thirtieth year of the life of Adam upon the earth, that he again knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Seth: for she said, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat a son; and he called his name Enosh, saying, In that time began men to multiply upon the earth, and to afflict their souls and their hearts by transgressing and rebelling against the Lord.

And in the days of Enosh did the sons of men continue to rebel and transgress against the Lord, and they provoked the Most High unto wrath.

And they went and served other gods, and forgat the Lord who had created them upon the earth: yea, in those days did the sons of men make unto themselves graven images of brass and of iron, of wood and of stone, and bowed down themselves unto them and served them.

Every man made unto himself a god, and worshipped the work of his own hands; and they forsook the Lord all the days of Enosh and his children. Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against them because of their abominations which they wrought in the earth.

And the Lord caused the waters of the river Gihon to overflow, and he consumed them, and destroyed the third part of the earth; yet the sons of men returned not from their evil ways, but their hands were still stretched forth to do evil in the sight of the Lord.

And in those days there was neither sowing nor reaping in the earth; for the famine was sore among the sons of men.

And the seed which they did sow became thorns and thistles and briers; for from the days of Adam had this word gone forth concerning the earth, that it should be cursed for his sake, because he had sinned before the Lord.

And it came to pass, when men continued to transgress and rebel against God, and to corrupt their ways, that the earth also was corrupted.

And Enosh lived ninety years, and begat Cainan.

And Cainan grew, and when he was forty years old, he became wise, and increased in knowledge and all manner of understanding; and he reigned over the sons of men, and led them in wisdom and knowledge.

For Cainan was a man exceeding wise, and he had understanding in all wisdom; and by his wisdom he ruled over spirits and over demons.

And Cainan knew by his wisdom that God would destroy the sons of men because they had sinned upon the earth, and that in the latter days the Lord would bring upon them the waters of the flood.

Wherefore Cainan wrote upon tablets of stone the things which should come to pass in the latter days, and laid them up in his treasures.

And Cainan reigned over all the earth, and turned many of the sons of men unto the service of God.

And when Cainan was threescore and ten years old, he begat three sons and two daughters.

And these are the names of the children of Cainan: the firstborn was called Mahalalel, the second Enan, and the third Mered; and their sisters were Adah and Zillah: these five were born unto him.

And Lamech, the son of Methusael, became kin unto Cainan by marriage; and he took Adah and Zillah to wife. And Adah conceived and bare a son, and she called his name Jabal.

And she conceived again, and bare a son, and called his name Jubal. But Zillah was barren in those days, and bare not.

For in those days began men to transgress against the commandment of God, which he had given unto Adam, saying, Be fruitful and multiply in the earth.

And certain of the sons of men caused their wives to drink a potion to make them barren, that their forms might not be marred, and that their beauty might be preserved.

And when the sons of men caused their wives to drink, Zillah drank also with them.

And the child-bearing women became as widows in the sight of their husbands, though their husbands were yet alive; for unto the barren alone were they joined in affection.

And it came to pass, at the end of days and years, that the Lord opened the womb of Zillah in her old age.

And she conceived, and bare a son, and called his name Tubal-cain, saying, After I had withered away, I have gotten a man from the Almighty.

And again she conceived, and bare a daughter, and called her name Naamah; for she said, After I had withered away, I have obtained pleasure and delight.

And Lamech was old and stricken in years, and his eyes were dim, that he could not see; and Tubal-cain his son led him. And it came to pass, one day as they walked in the field, Cain the son of Adam drew near unto them. Now Lamech was very aged, and Tubal-cain was but a youth.

And Tubal-cain said unto his father, Draw thy bow. And he drew his bow and smote Cain with an arrow, for he thought him to be a wild beast afar off, and he slew him.

And the arrow entered into Cain, though he was a great way off, and he fell to the earth and died.

Thus did the Lord avenge the blood of Abel upon Cain, according to his word which he spake.

And it came to pass, when Cain was dead, that Lamech and his son went to look upon the beast which they had slain; and behold, Cain their father’s father lay dead upon the ground.

And Lamech was sore grieved that he had done this thing; and he smote his hands together in his sorrow, and smote his son also, and slew him.

And the wives of Lamech, hearing what was done, sought to slay him.

And from that day Adah and Zillah hated Lamech, because he had slain Cain and Tubal-cain; and they separated themselves from him, and would not hearken unto his voice.

And Lamech came unto his wives, and entreated them to hear his words concerning this matter.

And he said unto them, Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, give ear unto my speech: for ye have imagined and said, I have slain a man with my wounds, and a child with my stripes for their having done no violence. But know ye surely, I am old and grey-headed, and mine eyes are dim through age, and I did this thing unwittingly.

And the wives of Lamech hearkened unto him in this matter, and they returned unto him according to the counsel of their father Adam. Yet they bare him no more children, for they perceived that the wrath of God increased in those days against the sons of men, to destroy them by the waters of the flood for their evil.

And Mahalalel the son of Cainan lived threescore and five years, and begat Jared: and Jared lived two and sixty years, and begat Enoch.
