Chapter 11 ****⇨

Nimrod builds four cities in Shinar—Nimrod reneweth his reign and continueth in evil—Chedorlaomer subdues Ham’s families—Nahor dies—Abram returneth and serveth Noah—Terah’s idolatry is rebuked—Abram destroys the idols in his father’s house—Abram refuses to serve wood and stone—Abram stands before Nimrod and pronounces judgment.

And Nimrod, son of Cush, was yet in the land of Shinar; and he reigned over it, and dwelt there, and built cities in the land of Shinar.

And these are the names of the four cities which he built, and he called them according to the occurrences that befell them in the building of the tower.

He called the first Babel, saying, Because the Lord there confounded the language of all the earth; and the name of the second he called Erech, because from thence God dispersed them.

The third he called Eched, saying, There was a great battle at that place; and the fourth he called Calnah, because his princes and mighty men were consumed there—for they vexed the Lord, and rebelled and transgressed against him.

And when Nimrod had built these cities in the land of Shinar, he placed in them the remnant of his people, his princes and his mighty men that were left in his kingdom.

And Nimrod dwelt in Babel, and there renewed his reign over the remnant of his subjects, and he reigned securely; and the subjects and princes of Nimrod called him Amraphel, saying, At the tower his princes and men fell through his counsel.

Yet Nimrod returned not unto the Lord, but continued in iniquity, teaching wickedness to the sons of men; and Mardon, his son, was more wicked than his father, and added yet further abominations.

He caused the sons of men to sin; therefore it is said, From the wicked goeth forth wickedness.

In those days there was war among the families of the children of Ham as they dwelt in the cities they had built.

Chedorlaomer, king of Elam, went forth against the families of the children of Ham, and smote them, and brought them into subjection; and he marched to the five cities of the plain, and fought against them, and subdued them, so that they became his vassals.

And they served him twelve years, giving him tribute year by year.

In the forty and ninth year of the life of Abram, son of Terah, Nahor the son of Serug died.

And in the fiftieth year of the life of Abram son of Terah, Abram went forth from the house of Noah and returned to his father’s house.

And Abram knew the Lord, and walked in His ways and statutes, and the Lord his God was with him.

Terah his father was yet captain of Nimrod’s host, and he served strange gods.

Abram came to his father’s house, and saw twelve gods standing in their chapels; and the wrath of Abram was kindled when he beheld these images in his father’s house.

And Abram said, As the Lord liveth, these images shall not remain in my father’s house; so shall the Lord who created me do unto me, if I fail to break them all within three days.

Abram departed, and his anger burned within him. He hastened from the inward chamber to his father’s court, where he found Terah seated, surrounded by his servants; and Abram drew near and sat before him.

Abram asked his father, saying, Father, where is the God who created heaven and earth, and all mankind, and who made thee and me?

Terah answered, saying, Behold, those who created us stand with us in the house.

Abram replied, My lord, show them to me, I pray thee; and Terah led Abram into the inner chamber, and behold, the chamber was filled with gods of wood and stone—twelve great images, and many smaller without number.

Terah said unto Abram, Behold these are they that made all that thou seest upon the earth, and that created me and thee, and all mankind.

Terah bowed down to his gods, and departed; and Abram accompanied him partway.

Abram then went unto his mother and sat before her, and said, Behold, my father hath shown me those who made heaven and earth, and all mankind.

Therefore, fetch a kid from the flock, and prepare savory meat, that I may offer it to my father’s gods, that haply I may be accepted by them.

His mother did as he commanded, fetching a kid and preparing savory meat; and she gave it unto Abram. Abram took the meat and laid it before his father’s gods, drawing nigh that they might eat; but Terah knew it not.

Abram beheld them as he sat before them, and saw that they had no voice, no hearing, no sense; not one could stretch forth hand to eat.

Abram mocked them, saying, Surely the meat I have prepared hath not pleased them, or perhaps it was too little; therefore tomorrow I will bring better and more abundant meat to see the outcome.

On the morrow, Abram bade his mother fetch three choice kids from the flock, and she prepared exquisite savory meat as her son desired; and Terah knew it not.

Abram brought the meat and placed it before his father’s gods, drawing nigh that they might eat; but none moved to eat, for they had no voice nor hearing.

In the evening of that day, Abram was filled with the spirit of God.

He cried aloud, saying, Woe unto my father and to this wicked generation, whose hearts are turned to vanity, who serve idols of wood and stone that can neither eat, smell, hear, nor speak—gods with mouths but no speech, eyes but no sight, ears but no hearing, hands but no feeling, and feet that move not; even as those who made them, and who trust in them.

Abram’s anger flamed against his father, and he seized a hatchet, entering the chamber of the idols, and broke all the gods in his father’s house.

He placed the hatchet in the hand of the chief idol, and went out. Terah returned, having heard the sound of the hatchet striking, and came to see what had been done.

Terah entered the chamber, and saw the idols fallen and broken, and the hatchet in the unbroken chief idol’s hand, with the savory meat still before them.

Terah’s wrath was kindled exceedingly, and he hastened out to confront Abram.

He found Abram sitting in the house and said, What is this thou hast done to my gods?

Abram answered, saying, Not so, my lord. I placed savory meat before them, and when I drew near that they might eat, they stretched forth their hands to eat before the chief had moved.

The great idol saw the deeds of its fellows and was enraged; it took the hatchet and broke them all; behold, the hatchet remaineth in its hand as thou seest.

Terah’s anger burned against Abram, and he said, What lies are these that thou tellest me? Can these gods have spirit, soul, or power to do as thou hast said? Are they not wood and stone, which I myself made?

Abram answered, saying, How then canst thou serve these idols which have no power? Can they deliver thee? Can they hear thy prayers? Can they save thee from thine enemies, or fight thy battles? Why serve wood and stone which can neither speak nor hear?

Now therefore, restrain thyself and bring not evil upon thy soul and the souls of thy household by serving wood and stone.

Abram sprang up, ran to the chief idol, and seized the hatchet, breaking it; then fled from his father’s house.

Terah, seeing all that Abram had done, hastened to the king and stood before Nimrod, bowing low. The king asked, What wouldst thou?

Terah replied, I pray thee, my lord, hear me. Fifty years ago a child was born to me, and now he hath done this to my gods and spoken these words. Send for him that he may stand before thee, and judge him according to the law, that we may be delivered from his wickedness.

Nimrod sent three of his servants, and they brought Abram before the king. Nimrod and all his princes and servants were seated, and Terah sat also among them.

Nimrod said unto Abram, What is this thou hast done to thy father and to his gods?

Abram answered as he had spoken to his father, saying, The chief god that labored with its fellows smote them, as thou hast heard.

Nimrod asked, Could they speak and eat as thou sayest?

Abram replied, If they have no power, why serve them and lead others into folly? Dost thou think they can save thee or do aught for thee that thou shouldst serve them? Why wilt thou not recognize the God of the universe, who created thee, and in whose hand is the power to kill and to make alive?

O foolish and ignorant king, woe unto thee forever!

I thought thou wouldst teach thy servants the way of truth, but thou hast filled the earth with sin by leading thy people astray.

Hast thou not heard that our fathers sinned in this matter, and the Eternal God brought the flood upon them and destroyed the earth?

How canst thou continue to serve wood and stone, who can neither hear nor speak, thereby drawing down the wrath of the God of the universe upon thee?

Put away this evil, and serve the God of the universe—Thy life is in His hand, and then it shall go well with thee.

But if thy hardened heart hearken not unto my words to forsake thy wickedness and serve the Eternal God, then shalt thou die in shame, thou, thy people, and all who follow thy evil ways.

When Abram had ceased speaking before the king and princes, he lifted up his eyes toward heaven, saying, The Lord seeth all the wicked, and He will judge them.
