Chapter 3 ****

Enoch walks with God and begets Methuselah—He separates himself from the sons of men to serve the Lord—An angel commands Enoch to teach men the ways of God—Enoch reigns as king over the sons of men and brings peace to the earth—He teaches wisdom, knowledge, and righteousness—Adam dies at 930 years of age and is buried in a cave with great pomp—Enoch ascends into heaven in a whirlwind with horses and chariots of fire—The sons of men search for him but find him not.

And Enoch lived threescore and five years, and begat Methuselah.

And Enoch walked with God after he had begotten Methuselah, and he served the Lord, and abhorred the evil ways of men.

And the soul of Enoch was knit unto the instruction of the Lord, in wisdom and understanding; and he withdrew himself wisely from among the sons of men, and hid himself from them many days.

And it came to pass, after many years, as he ministered unto the Lord and prayed in his house, that an angel of the Lord called unto him from heaven, and said, Behold, here am I.

And the angel said, Arise, go forth from thy house and from the place where thou hidest thyself, and show thyself unto the sons of men, that thou mayest teach them the way wherein they ought to walk, and the work which they must do to enter into the ways of God.

Then Enoch arose according to the word of the Lord, and went forth from his house, even from the chamber where he was concealed; and he came unto the sons of men and taught them the ways of the Lord, and gathered them together, and made known unto them the instruction of the Lord.

And he caused it to be proclaimed throughout all the habitations of men, saying, Whosoever desireth to know the ways of the Lord and to do good works, let him come unto Enoch.

And all the sons of men assembled themselves unto him, for as many as desired these things came unto Enoch; and Enoch reigned over them according to the word of the Lord, and they came and bowed themselves before him, and gave ear unto his word.

And the Spirit of God was upon Enoch, and he taught his people the wisdom of God and his ways; and the sons of men served the Lord all the days of Enoch, and came to hear his wisdom.

And all the kings of the sons of men, both first and last, with their princes and judges, came unto Enoch, having heard of his wisdom, and they bowed themselves before him, and besought him to reign over them, and he consented.

And they gathered themselves together, an hundred and thirty kings and princes in all, and made Enoch king over them, and he ruled them with authority and command.

And Enoch taught them wisdom and knowledge and the ways of the Lord; and he made peace among them, and peace was upon the earth all the days of Enoch.

And Enoch reigned over the sons of men two hundred and forty and three years, and dealt justly and righteously with all his people, and led them in the ways of the Lord.

And these are the generations of Enoch: Methuselah, Elisha, and Elimelech, his three sons; and their sisters were Melca and Naamah. And Methuselah lived eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech.

And it came to pass in the fifty and sixth year of the life of Lamech, that Adam died, being nine hundred and thirty years old; and his two sons, with Enoch and Methuselah his son, buried him with great pomp, after the manner of kings, in the cave which God had shown him.

And there was great mourning and weeping among the sons of men for Adam; wherefore it became a custom among them unto this day.

For Adam died because he did eat of the tree of knowledge, he and his children after him, as the Lord God had spoken.

And it came to pass in the year of Adam’s death, which was the two hundred and forty and third year of the reign of Enoch, that Enoch resolved to separate himself again from the sons of men, that he might serve the Lord as at the first.

And Enoch did so, but he did not wholly hide himself from them, but remained apart from them three days, and on the fourth day came forth unto them.

And during the three days he abode in his chamber, he prayed and gave praise unto the Lord his God; and on the day wherein he came forth, he taught the people the ways of the Lord, and answered all their questions concerning God.

And he continued after this manner many years; and afterward he withdrew himself six days, and appeared unto them on the seventh; and after that, once in a month; and afterward once in a year, until all the kings, princes, and sons of men sought earnestly to behold his face and to hear his words; but they could not, for great fear fell upon them at the sight of Enoch, for the awe of God was upon his countenance, and no man durst draw nigh unto him, lest he should die.

Then all the kings and princes took counsel to gather the sons of men together, that they might speak unto Enoch at such time as he should come forth, and they did so.

And it came to pass, on a certain day when Enoch came forth, that they all gathered unto him; and Enoch spake unto them the words of the Lord, and taught them wisdom and knowledge; and they bowed down before him, saying, Long live the king! Long live the king!

And it came to pass afterward, as the kings and princes and the sons of men spake with Enoch, and he taught them the ways of God, behold, an angel of the Lord called unto Enoch from heaven, and desired to bring him up into heaven, to reign there over the sons of God, even as he had reigned over the sons of men on earth.

When Enoch heard these things, he gathered together all the inhabitants of the earth, and taught them wisdom and knowledge, and gave them holy instructions, saying, I am required to ascend into heaven; I know not the day of my going.

Wherefore now I will teach you wisdom and knowledge, and give you instruction how ye ought to walk upon the earth, that ye may live; and he did so.

And he taught them wisdom and knowledge, and gave them instruction, and reproved them, and delivered unto them statutes and judgments to observe on the earth; and he made peace among them, and taught them the way of everlasting life, and dwelt with them yet a while, instructing them in all these things.

And it came to pass, while Enoch yet spake unto the sons of men, they lifted up their eyes, and lo, the likeness of a great horse descended from heaven, and the horse moved upon the air.

And they told Enoch what they had seen, and Enoch said unto them, For my sake doth this horse descend upon the earth; the time is come that I must depart from you, and ye shall see my face no more.

And the horse came down and stood before Enoch; and all the sons of men that were with him beheld it.

Then Enoch commanded a proclamation to be made, saying, Whoso delighteth to know the ways of the Lord his God, let him come this day unto Enoch before he be taken from among us.

And all the sons of men assembled themselves and came unto Enoch that day; and all the kings of the earth with their princes and counselors tarried with him that day; and Enoch taught them wisdom and knowledge, and gave them divine instruction, and exhorted them to serve the Lord and walk in his ways all their days, and he continued to make peace among them.

And it came to pass thereafter that he arose and mounted the horse, and went forth; and about eight hundred thousand men followed after him, and they journeyed with him one day’s journey.

And on the second day, he said unto them, Return unto your tents; why will ye go further? peradventure ye shall die. And some of them returned, but those who remained went with him six days' journey; and every day Enoch said unto them, Return to your tents, lest ye die; but they would not, and continued with him.

And on the sixth day, some still clave unto him, and said, We will go with thee whithersoever thou goest; as the Lord liveth, only death shall part us.

And they were so urgent to go with him, that he ceased to speak unto them; and they followed him and would not return.

And when the kings returned, they caused a reckoning to be made, that they might know the number of the men who had gone with Enoch; and it came to pass, on the seventh day, that Enoch ascended into heaven in a whirlwind, with horses and chariots of fire.

And on the eighth day, all the kings that had been with Enoch sent to fetch back the number of men that had gone with him, even from the place where he ascended into heaven.

And they came to the place and found it covered with snow, and upon the snow lay great stones of snow; and one said to his fellow, Come, let us break through the snow and see, peradventure the men that were with Enoch are dead beneath these stones of snow; and they searched, but found them not, for Enoch was taken up into heaven.
